There was a lovely presentation of the Rachel Carson Prize to Léo Chenu and Tadé Whenu for their dissertations. Workshops that were genuinely useful. And an afternoon full of prizes and proud faces.

At every educational institution, there are moments when an idea sticks. Because it rubs you the wrong way. Because it could be better. Because you feel: we have to do this together.

For Groene Peper 2026, we are looking for exactly those ideas.

The Call for Proposals is open and we invite everyone working on sustainable education to submit a session proposal.

During this edition, Summa, Fontys University of Applied Sciences and Eindhoven University of Technology are joining forces as joint hosts. This means that we are explicitly looking for sessions that transcend boundaries: between educational levels, roles and practice partners.

No lectures, but action

Groene Peper is all about action and interaction. We are looking for workshops, challenges, dialogues and other active working methods in which participants work together. Sessions in which you investigate, build, test or experience something. And in which participants not only listen, but also participate.

Important aspects:

• a clear central question or challenge
• a clear benefit for participants (e.g. tools, insights, plans or new collaborations)
• focus on collaboration between vocational education, higher professional education, university education and/or practical partners
• a link to one or more SDGs and/or IDGs

Thematic lines

Your session ties in with one of the four thematic lines of Groene Peper 2026:

1. AI for the Future – Technology in the service of sustainability

About how AI can contribute to sustainable solutions in education and society. Think of applications, ethical considerations and understandable, people-oriented use.

2. Challenge-Based Learning – Learning by doing

Sessions in which participants work on real-life issues, using concrete methodologies and tools that they can then apply themselves.

3. Sustainability in Education – From vision to subject

About embedding sustainability in curriculum, lesson design and assessment. Practical, applicable and focused on change.

4. Diversity & Inclusion – The social side of sustainability

Sessions that show how social justice, inclusion and sustainability come together and can be translated into action.

Who is the call for?

The call is open to students, teachers, teaching teams, sustainability coordinators, researchers, policymakers and practice partners. One or more supervisors per session is possible. Sessions last 30, 45 or 60 minutes and can be in Dutch, English or both.

🔹 Both the opening and closing provided a fresh perspective and room for reflection, ensuring that everyone went home inspired and with new insights. 

🔹 Of course, there was also plenty of festive attention for the award winners 🏆. Congratulations to Helena Comella Romeu on her impressive thesis ‘Framing in Climate Change Communication and its Influence on Ideological Divides’ and to Sterre ter Haar on her award-winning Master’s thesis ‘The direct effect of CO2 rise on the plant ionome: Implications for Exacerbating Global Malnutrition’. In addition, no fewer than 11 enthusiastic student groups 💡 won cash prizes for their innovative ideas to actually realise their sustainable initiatives during the Sustainability in Education Challenge. 

🔹 The annual SustainaBul ranking, compiled by Studenten voor Morgen 🌍, was also proudly announced. For the second year in a row, Hogeschool van Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein – VHL University of Applied Sciences took the number 1 position 🥇, a fantastic achievement! This year’s Best Practice award went to the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam for their inspiring initiative ‘Climate Change and Sustainability Law Clinic’. Congratulations! 🎉

🔹 With no fewer than 17 workshops and more than 35 inspiring speakers, you could immerse yourself in a wide range of themes related to “Justice in Transitions”. From in-depth discussions about what the fair price really is, to practical tips on how to bring justice into the classroom from a didactic point of view.

Posters: Student Perspectives on Equity and Sustainability

Objective: To create an engaging platform for students from mbo, hbo and wo institutions to showcase their innovative ideas, research, and projects addressing the theme “What is Justice in Transitions?” This session will inspire attendees and foster a deeper understanding of how justice can be integrated into sustainable transitions from a student perspective.

Description: The student poster session will provide a space for students to present their unique take on justice within transitions related to sustainability, social equity, and environmental responsibility. Posters may explore:

• Case studies of community projects addressing justice in sustainability.
• Research on equitable solutions to challenges in energy, climate, or social transitions.
• Creative or interdisciplinary approaches to defining and applying justice in transitions.

Participants will have the opportunity to explain their work to a diverse audience, including peers, educators, and sustainability professionals, promoting dialogue and exchange of ideas.

Students are invited to submit abstracts for their posters that:

1. Address the theme of justice in transitions.
2. Highlight innovative or impactful solutions.
3. Share lessons learned or recommendations for the future.

Selected posters will be displayed during the Groen Peper event, with designated times for students to present their work.

Expected Outcomes:

• Increased awareness and understanding of justice in transitions through student-led initiatives.
• Networking opportunities for students with educators and sustainability professionals.
• Inspiration for other students and attendees to take action in their own contexts

Want to present more than just a poster?
Teachers can request a stand (booth) at the inspiration market in addition to a poster. This offers the chance to demonstrate teaching methods, research projects or educational materials in an interactive way.

Teaching Approaches for Sustainable Transitions

Objective: To provide a platform for lecturers from mbo, hbo and wo institutions to share best practices, methodologies, and classroom innovations for teaching justice in transitions, inspiring fellow educators to integrate these concepts into their curricula.

Description: The lecturer poster session will highlight how educators are addressing justice in transitions within their teaching practices. Posters may include:

• Innovative lesson plans or modules.
• Interdisciplinary approaches to teaching justice and sustainability.
• Reflections on challenges and successes in integrating justice into the curriculum.
• Strategies for fostering student engagement and critical thinking around justice in transitions.

This session aims to promote the exchange of ideas and inspire educators to adapt and implement these practices in their own teaching environments.

Lecturers are encouraged to submit abstracts for their posters that:

1. Share effective teaching practices or case studies.
2. Provide insights into engaging students with the theme.
3. Highlight measurable impacts or lessons learned from their approaches.

Selected posters will be displayed at the Groen Peper event, with scheduled opportunities for presenters to discuss their work with attendees.

Expected Outcomes:

• Enhanced collaboration and knowledge-sharing among educators.
• Greater integration of justice in transitions within educational practices.
• Inspiration for new teaching approaches that emphasize sustainability and equity.

The World, We, You

We look at justice from three shells, namely:

1. You: the individual.. Justice in transition asks us to look critically at how we ourselves live, work and learn. It provides space to examine how change affects our daily lives and to reflect on how we deal with it in a just and conscious way.

2.We: your community, your team, your institution or your local city. Justice asks us to reflect and take action with and in our immediate environment. How do we increase the potential in the environment in which we live and work?And how can we be more social and inclusive even if we don’t always know each other personally?

3. The world: the broad natural and social structures around us now and in the future. It encourages us to think further ahead and to respect the rights of nature. Thus we plant seeds of change that may not always grow immediately, but whose roots will grow strong and deep to support future generations.

The approach of the day is to experience, connect and co-create on the above questions. We hope to go home with new insights about what justice means in this time of rapid change, what educational practices are valuable in this context, what schools of thought we can explore, and what new ideas we can develop.

Subthemes

Within the theme, we have a number of subthemes:

Collective Responsibility

Justice in transitions requires a clear and flexible moral compass. This subtheme focuses on how we deal with psychological distance in space and time, and how we can develop empathy. Transitions bring questions about our responsibility to others, both near and far, now and in the future. In these sessions, we explore how we can strengthen empathy to broaden our actions and promote justice in transitions. We also look at how we can redefine moral boundaries for the equitable use of natural resources.

Creativity, Design and Art

Creativity plays a key role in opening new perspectives and inspiring collaboration. How can art and design contribute to an inclusive and equitable transition? In workshops, we will explore how to design spaces where people share new insights together, redefine challenges and co-create solutions. Art can contribute not only to imagining a better world, but also to building bridges between people and ideas. Together, we explore how creativity can be a catalyst for just change.

Rights for Nature

This subtheme explores how we as humans can become part of nature again and also how we recognize nature in legal structures. We explore how people can become part of nature again, as indigenous peoples often emphasize. How can we encourage wonder for nature and grow care for it in education? At the same time, this sub-theme provides space to explore the legal aspects of recognition. What rights does the urban forest have? How can you better understand and grant rights to ancient beech trees and our country’s flowing rivers, but also recognize eco-genocide in the Amazon? The workshops under this theme address some of these questions.

Building Bridges in Learning Environment

How can we transform classrooms into places of equity and inclusivity? In these sessions, we will explore how teachers can facilitate conversations about cultural, social and environmental differences, and how discomfort and conflict can be transformed into opportunities for growth. How do you build bridges between today’s genius students and the future generation? What materials can you use to experience intergenerational justice in the classroom? We also look at ways to engage education professionals and students in building bridges in the classroom. Teachers will learn how to use differences as a force in learning and promote inclusivity.

Equity in the Institution

Educational institutions play a critical role in promoting equity. How can institutions themselves act equitably and contribute to an inclusive society? These sessions focus on developing and implementing projects, methods and activities that promote solidarity and inclusiveness. We explore how organizational systems can function fairly, and how all stakeholders – from staff to students – can work together for structural change within the institution. After all, justice starts at the grassroots: how an organization shapes itself and communicates its values

Call for workshops and theme sessions

Would you like to contribute to Green Pepper through a workshop? Then don’t hesitate to submit your workshop. Please do so by February 4, 2025.

Each workshop focuses on one or more of the shells in the figure above and offers participants the opportunity to experience, connect and co-create. When registering, please indicate which subtheme your session addresses, whether it involves experiencing, connecting or co-creating, and the length of the session.

We invite workshop leaders to offer concrete examples of transition issues, for example from their own educational experience or specific transitions such as energy, food, circular economy or digitalization. The goal is that participants go home with something concrete: practical tools they can apply in their education or daily lives.
