Judith Meurs

When I try to describe the study I am doing, I often tell people that it is a ‘world improvement’ study. I hope through this study and all the experiences I have gained and may yet gain to make a small, or big, difference.

Through the position I now get to hold as a board member of the study association, I am gaining fantastic experience. My job is to secure sponsors and partners for the association, and this in line with our values of ‘sustainability, diversity, responsibility and development’. Moreover, these are very important values for me personally, which is why I love the fact that I get to be one of the representatives of the study association.

Also, the positions I have already had the opportunity to hold during my high school years have taught me an awful lot. As a youth administrator of the water board, I entered a completely new world, but it was precisely this that allowed me to gain skills such as public speaking and critical thinking. After continuing with the water board at the national level as a youth water board member, I further developed my leadership skills. My position in the participation council and participation in Model European Parliament also taught me a lot.

As a sophomore in a bachelor’s programme, I am still searching which way I want to go, and my (academic) career is still in its infancy. However, I have chosen the main track ‘planet’, which focuses on energy transition, environmental problems and the climate crisis. Furthermore, I want to follow the political ‘track’ alongside it, and broaden my knowledge with subjects from other directions of this study.

I am convinced that I can make a difference somewhere by staying active in a small community and learning about complex world problems in the meantime.
