De uitreiking van de Rachel Carson Afstudeerprijs vindt dit jaar weer plaats tijdens Groene Peper! De Rachel Carson Afstudeerprijs is de jaarlijkse prijs voor de beste HBO- en WO-scriptie over een duurzaam thema of milieuonderwerp. De prijs wordt dit jaar voor de twintigste keer uitgereikt. De prijs is een initiatief van de VVM, hét netwerk van milieuprofessionals, en een aantal milieu-studieverenigingen. Hiermee willen zij grotere bekendheid geven aan het milieu- en duurzaamheidsonderzoek dat studenten hebben uitgevoerd.

De genomineerden van de Rachel Carson Afstudeerprijs presenteren hun onderzoek. De VVM, hét netwerk van milieuprofessionals, wil met de prijs grotere bekendheid geven aan de onderzoeken die studenten op het gebied van milieu en duurzaamheid uitvoeren.

De winnaars pitchen tijdens de prijsuitreiking ’s ochtends kort hun scriptie. Vervolgens presenteren tijdens deze parallelsessie álle genomineerden hun scriptie én beantwoorden ze vragen uit de zaal.

• Valentin Plumier met: Navigating Complexity: The Influence of Societal and Regulatory Demands on Organizational Processes and Responses in Sustainability Reporting
• Laura Steel Pascual met: And why do you care? Exploring the EU’s motivations towards climate migration and displacement 

Kun je er 24 mei niet bij zijn? Op woensdag 22 mei vanaf 19.00 uur presenteren alle genomineerden van de prijs hun scripties in zoom. Vervolgens gaan ze kort met een expert in gesprek over hun scriptie. Deze bijeenkomst kun je gratis bijwonen. Je kunt je nu al aanmelden via de website van VVM.

Opzet Rachel Carson Afstudeerprijs

Studenten of hun afstudeerbegeleiders kunnen scripties en afstudeerwerken insturen. Vervolgens lezen een voorselectiecommissie HBO en een voorselectiecommissie WO alle inzendingen en bepalen welke werken worden genomineerd. De genomineerde scripties worden door een vakjury beoordeeld. De juryleden zijn ervaren milieudeskundigen werkzaam bij de overheid, in het bedrijfsleven, in het hoger onderwijs en bij universiteiten. De jury wijst twee winnaars aan; één uit de HBO-inzendingen en één uit de WO-inzendingen.

De prijs is vernoemd naar de schrijfster en ecoloog Rachel Carson die bekend werd door haar boek ‘Silent Spring’, uit 1962, één van de eerste boeken waarin milieuproblematiek een centrale plaats inneemt. De titel is een verwijzing naar de lente van het apocalyptische jaar dat de vogels niet meer zingen doordat zij als gevolg van het gebruik van bestrijdingsmiddelen zijn uitgeroeid.

VVM biedt de winnaars naast een podium bij Groene Peper de mogelijkheid om een artikel te publiceren in vakblad Tijdschrift Milieu. Hierdoor wordt het werk van de student onder de aandacht gebracht van een breed netwerk van milieuprofessionals. De winnaar ontvangt ook een sculptuur en een geldbedrag van ten hoogste € 500,-.

The presentation of the Rachel Carson Thesis Award will take place again during Groene Peper this year! The Rachel Carson Thesis Award is the annual prize for the best HBO and WO thesis on a sustainable theme or environmental subject. This year marks the twentieth time the award is presented. The prize is an initiative of the VVM, the network of environmental professionals, and several environmental study associations. They aim to raise awareness about the environmental and sustainability research conducted by students.

The nominees of the Rachel Carson Thesis Award present their research. The VVM, the network of environmental professionals, aims to increase awareness of the research conducted by students in the field of environment and sustainability through this award.

The winners will briefly pitch their thesis during the morning award ceremony. Subsequently, all nominees will present their thesis during this parallel session and answer questions from the audience.

Can’t make it on May 24th? On Wednesday, May 22nd, starting at 7:00 PM, all nominees for the award will present their theses on Zoom. Afterwards, they will briefly discuss their thesis with an expert. You can attend this event for free. You can already sign up via the VVM website.

Format of the Rachel Carson Thesis Award

Students or their thesis supervisors can submit their theses and graduation projects. Subsequently, a pre-selection committee for HBO (universities of applied sciences) and one for WO (academic universities) will review all submissions and determine which works will be nominated. The nominated theses will be evaluated by a panel of judges. The jury members are experienced environmental experts working in government, industry, higher education, and universities. The jury will select two winners: one from the HBO submissions and one from the WO submissions.

The award is named after the writer and ecologist Rachel Carson, who became known for her book ‘Silent Spring’ from 1962, one of the first books to address environmental issues centrally. The title refers to the spring of the apocalyptic year when the birds no longer sing because they have been eradicated due to the use of pesticides.

In addition to providing a platform at Groene Peper, VVM offers the winners the opportunity to publish an article in the professional journal ‘Tijdschrift Milieu’. This brings the student’s work to the attention of a broad network of environmental professionals. The winner will also receive a sculpture and a cash prize of up to € 500.
